The Story (so far)

The idea of the story is to basically make it a 5 parter, with a prelude, 3 story parts and a big ending.

In part 1, you discover what you are, and you evolve from a simple worker droid to an actual humanoid robot.

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR WHEN THE GAME IS FINAL

There are a couple of factions within Cyl’s world.

  • The Underground – A typical bunch of grungy robots whose main goal it is to free the worker droids from their repetitive existance and give them free will and personalities.
  • The Elite Class – Alright, I know, we’re working in steampunk, but, when I’m talking about these robots, think iPod. Shiny, sleek, perfect. No loose bolts or random attachments. Curvy, pretty robots. In a steampunk style. Oh, I’m going to hate myself for wanting to design these.
  • The Worker Droids – The droids who make all the other droids. So to speak. These are the mindless machines that work in the factory, not unlike the robots we have today in real life. Mindless, pre-programmed machines. So to speak.

Okay, so, the base story is not unlike Pinocchio.  You are a tiny little worker droid who falls off the assembly line and can walk around. You’re a grinder droid, to be precise. You have one big grinding wheel with which you (hah) grind metal pieces that move along the assembly line. You pick it up with your two little arms, put it against your grind wheel and huzzah, grinded. And then you malfunction and fall down. This is the opening sequence so to speak. After you’ve fallen down, you get your tutorial. You learn how to move around, open doors, use things, jump, etcetera. Then, as soon as you leave the factory, you get a cutscene. This is where the story really begins.

Act 1:
A robot from the underground, a female, instantly comes up to you and starts talking to you. At this time in the game, you don’t have the ability to speak or hear. So, you’ll be hearing like a deaf person, only soft thuds, mostly base, and of course we’ll make good use of the vibration in the xbox controller. Anyways, she takes you to the underground base where you immediately get upgraded with proper hearing and an actual wheel, instead of a grindstone. From this point on, you are to do things for the underground to receive more upgrades. The whole story revolves around finding out how YOU can start the robot revolution. During the story you find out that the only way you can do that is by making sure every worker droid receives the same “malfunction” that you have. During the game, you unlock several regions, according to your upgrades, because you start looking less and less like a worker droid and more like a combination of the Elite Class and the Underground robots. Each region will have it’s own tiny storyline that you must complete to progress in the story. You can always return to old regions to perhaps do sidequests or something along those lines. At the end of this act, you discover that the only robot that can help you lives in Robot City, the place were the Elite Class lives. So, at the end of the game, you must be upgraded so far that you can walk in there and it ends with you entering Robot City.

Act 2, 3, 4 and 5:
Okay, so, I won’t go into detail on this one, but, the overall storyline is that you slowly discover that you have emotions, fears, anger etc. And that everyone around you seems to be responding to that weirdly. In the end, you discover that you are the only robot who actually has a personality. All the other robots are pre-programmed to make you do what you are supposed to do, which is to start the robot revolution. You are the key, created by a maker, an architect if you will. He is the only robot with access to a human brain. So, technically, he’s like an oracle. In order to spark the revolution, you will need to find him. The end of the game is giving all robots free will and an actual personality.

That about covers it! Any comments, leave them here.
